Fox News gets hacked, reports Obama assassinated

In the wee hours of yesterday morning, one of Fox News' Twitter accounts was hijacked by the hacker group Script Kiddies, who used the account to tweet six times that President Barack Obama had been assassinated. The tweets stayed up for several hours, although they have since been deleted.

The first hacked tweet that Twitter account @foxnewspolitics sent out came at around 2 a.m., and proclaimed the President assassinated. Within an hour, five other tweets were posted that said essentially the same thing, with the final one wishing Vice President Joe Biden good luck as the new U.S. President. It was around noon before the tweets were deleted. All the tweets can be read in the screencap below.

President Obama is, of course, just as alive as he was a week ago, although some Fox News followers must have been confused for quite some time. The false reports were widely retweeted.

Previously, Fox had been hacked twice: one leaked the personal information of X-Factor contestants, and another stole usernames and passwords of Fox employees.

Script Kiddies is a group comprised hackers, two of which are self-proclaimed former Anonymous members, who say they targeted Fox News because "we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting. It will be a never ending battle." Read the full Think Magazine interview here

The interviewee, who preferred to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, claimed that hacker groups like themselves exist to fight corruption. Is he/she right? Or are such groups merely cyber terrorists? To borrow a phrase, you decide.

  1. I heard about that, they could've been a little more convincing the first couple times though-I think they probably should've started out with the breaking news one. Oh and getting the lie straight would probably be a good thing, first reporting there were 3 shots, then a couple hours later saying 2 shots, wonder how old these hackers are. btw hackers bug the crap out of me, what is the thrill when you can't even see someone's frustrating after they ruin your computer. Computers aren't cheap to replace and some things on it like pictures just can't be replaced. I'm just not good at backing things up like I should!
